This is a seminal eclipse, the first in a series of eclipses in the sign pair of Taurus/Scorpio that will last through late 2023. While the nodes of the moon are still in the signs of Gemini/Sagittarius (as they have been since May 2020), we are now in a cusp phase where the symbolism of both Gemini/Sagittarius AND Taurus/Scorpio are playing out on center stage. The final Gemini/Sagittarius eclipse is on December 4- a total solar eclipse in Sagittarius. The nodes officially move into Taurus/Scorpio on January 18, 2022.
For a refresher on eclipses : they are new moons or full moons where the alignment between the sun, moon and earth is exact. In other words- an average new or full moon takes place when the earth and the luminaries (sun and moon) are not on the same plane. But during an eclipse, all 3 are lined up and centered around the ecliptic (the apparent path of the sun around the earth). We can think of this as three people standing closely in an exact line, instead of merely near to one another. Just as in that analogy- there is a very different sense of intimacy, potency and concentration inherent in an eclipse.
Just as a regular new moon has a period of influence of 1 month, an eclipse has roughly a 6 month period of influence. Some eclipses are more powerful than others, and eclipses also have a deeply personal and different effect if they are closely influencing any planets in your birth chart.
This eclipse falls at 27 degrees of Taurus, so anyone with planets near 27 degrees of Taurus or Scorpio will be most powerfully affected. Other extra-sensitive areas are 1 degree of Gemini/Sagittarius where the nodes of the moon are currently resting. And 12/13 degrees of Taurus/Scorpio where Uranus and Mars are locked in opposition. If any of these points are sensitive in your chart, then the upcoming weeks (and months) could see powerful changes.
Eclipses symbolize change. The potency of the alignment between the earth, the sun and the moon forces matters that have been on the back burner forward so they can be dealt with. Taurus, in particular, draws our attention to money, finances, resources, food, nature, values, possessions, priorities, art, and sensuality. There is a theme of comfort, acquisition and earthiness which runs through Taurus. These themes will in many ways take center stage in our lives in the next two years. But in the next 6 months, they are still “sharing” center stage with the Gemini/Sagittarius themes which have been guiding us for the past 18 months – namely communication, ideas, narratives, media, stories, publicity, beliefs, and travel.
Jupiter, the planet of expansion and growth, is a key figure during the eclipse. At 24 degrees of Aquarius, Jupiter is square to the sun and moon at 27 Scorpio/Taurus. This sets up a fixed sign T-square which is a highly stressful aspect. Mars opposing Uranus is also a very stressful aspect. And since Jupiter loves to “expand”, it is fanning the flames and blowing this tension out of proportion. Things could feel awkward at best, and slightly cataclysmic at worst. Taking deep breaths and keeping things in proportion is our best resource now. We do NOT want to make assumptions- which an overly zesty Jupiter can encourage us to do, as can the potent nodes who are rather buzzy at 1 degree Gemini/Sagittarius. Jupiter is connected to our belief systems so once again we need to reflect on what we believe and which narratives we have “bought into” – this relates to ‘big picture/spiritual/world’ beliefs as well as ‘current events’. What we believe (Jupiter), especially as it relates to our personal power (Scorpio) and ability to cultivate the life we desire (Taurus) is front and center now.
In its highest vibration, Taurus is slow, patient, observant, methodical, pragmatic and prudent. Tapping into these inner resources, whatever appears to be going on in the external world is our best ally. And KNOWING our own core values and priorities is also essential. If we feel like we need to make challenging decisions, this is our barometer.
And finally, Venus. As the ruler of Taurus, love and money planet Venus is the ruler of this eclipse. And Venus just happens to be OUT OF BOUNDS at the time of the eclipse! This is a relatively rare phenomenon (which happens every few years or so) when Venus leaves the normal declination of the sun. To return to our earlier analogy- Venus is now NOWHERE NEAR the other planets in a line (even though she usually is), so this gives her a wildcard renegade energy. At 12 degrees of Capricorn, Venus is also in an especially sensitive part of the zodiac, near where the epic Pluto Saturn conjunction of 2020 took place in January of that year. Needless to say, that kicked off a pretty seismic cultural shift. Just as we experienced big shifts in the wake of that conjunction in the realm of business, government, authority, power structures, regulations (Capricorn), so too this eclipse will trigger similar shifts, but also more prominently including financial (Venus) themes such as financial regulation, tax laws, market instability, and resource management. Again, we can expect these to be big themes (THE themes) for the upcoming several years. Keeping a close eye on what happens now will prove very instructive and informative.
